These Days of Covid have worn many of us down. It’s easy to feel isolated, lonely, and discouraged. God created us as social creatures, and as such, we need community to stay healthy emotionally.
When we’re alone, the enemy has a chance to begin telling us all kinds of nasty little lies. Things like: “Life is too hard.” “You don’t really matter.” “The world is going on just fine without you.” “Why bother to hope? There is nothing to look forward to.” “Your too tired. Don’t bother to get dressed. Nothing you do really matters.” “It’s never going to get better.”
And on and on it goes. Gloom and hopelessness drag us down into a pit of despair, and we don’t even know how we got there.
Counteract Doldrums
So how can we counteract these doldrums that are dragging us down? I have learned through many years of hardships that our surest defense against discouragement is the Word of God. That sounds like a glib answer to many. But trust me. There is not a more powerful weapon anywhere than God’s Word. It isn’t easy to hang on to the truth when Satan is battering us with lies, depression, discouragement, and despair. But God’s word can and will lift us and hold us up, if we hang on to it and speak it over the lies. Who are you going to listen to? So here’s your verse to hang on to today:
Psalm 42:11 (NASB 1995)
Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.
You are an overcomer, dear friend!
I find the following song uplifting and encouraging when I’m in the doldrums.
